How Does Professional Cat Grooming Work?
A professional cat groom usually starts with a check of the coat, skin, ears and nails, followed by brushing and dematting, nail trimming, a bath with a gentle dry, and any requested trims such as a sanitary trim, belly shave or lion cut. Groomers adjust to the cat's temperament and may split services over more than one visit. Bring rabies vaccination proof.
Cat grooming is a specialized skill. PetSmart notes that cat hair is about twice as dense as the thickest dog coats, and cats who are long-haired, older, overweight or arthritic often can't keep that coat clean and mat-free by themselves.
Steps in a typical cat grooming appointment
- Assessment. The groomer checks the coat, skin, ears, nails and teeth and asks about health, behavior and what you want done.
- Nail trim. Often done first, so the cat is safer to handle.
- Brushing and dematting. Loose undercoat is removed and mats are worked out or carefully clipped away.
- Bath. A gentle, cat-safe shampoo; not every groom includes one.
- Drying. Towel drying, then a gentle, unheated dryer. PetSmart says cats get a gentler dryer and brushing.
- Trims. Sanitary trim, belly shave, "comb cut" or a full lion cut, as requested.
- Finishing. Ear cleaning and a final brush-out.
Common cat grooming services

| Comb cut | An even, longer trim over the body |
| Dematting | Removing mats by brushing or clipping |
| Nail trim | Often available as a quick standalone service |
| "Pawdicure" packages | Nails and ear cleaning, sometimes teeth brushing (offered at some PetSmart salons) |
How groomers handle nervous cats
Groomers work slowly, take breaks and may stop if the cat or the groomer is at risk. PetSmart notes cats may not finish every service in one visit. Some groomers decline aggressive cats or charge a temperament fee (Catster). If your cat needs sedation to be groomed safely, that has to be done by a veterinarian, so ask your vet's clinic about grooming under sedation.
How to prepare your cat
- Put the carrier out a few days early with a familiar blanket.
- Keep indoor-outdoor cats inside the night before so they're home at appointment time.
- Bring rabies vaccination records; salons like PetSmart require them.
- Trim nails or brush a little in the days before, if your cat tolerates it.
After the groom
Expect your cat to groom itself heavily for a day, especially after a bath or haircut. A lion-cut cat may want a warmer spot in cool weather.
