How Often Should a Pet Sitter Visit a Cat?
A pet sitter should visit a cat at least once a day, and twice a day is better, according to cat behavior experts quoted by Inverse, including a board-certified veterinary behaviorist. Cats shouldn't go more than a day without someone checking on them, even with automatic feeders. Kittens, seniors, cats on medication and very social cats may need two visits or an overnight sitter.
Cats are independent, which leads many owners to leave them alone with extra food and water for a weekend. Cat experts advise against it.
How often to schedule cat sitter visits
| Cat | Visits per day |
|---|---|
| Healthy adult cat | At least 1, ideally 2 |
| Kittens, seniors, cats on medication | Ask your vet; plan extra visits or an overnight sitter |
| Very social or anxious cats | Ideally 2, with time for play and attention |
Cat behavior researcher Mikel Delgado (UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine) recommends at least one sitter visit a day and says two is even better. Veterinary behaviorist Katherine Pankratz suggests a consistent caretaker the cat gets along with, feeding at the usual mealtimes.
Why daily visits matter
- Health checks: problems such as urinary blockage, vomiting or not eating need prompt attention.
- Food and water: feeders jam and fountains fail.
- Litter: cats may avoid a dirty box and go elsewhere.
- Safety: cats can get trapped in closets, tangled in cords or injured.
- Company: many cats are more social than their reputation suggests.
What a cat sitter visit should include
- Fresh food and water, following your feeding schedule
- Scooping litter boxes
- Checking that the cat is eating, drinking, urinating and passing stool normally
- Medication if needed
- Play and attention
- A photo or message to you after each visit
How long should each visit be?
Rover's drop-in visits are typically 30 or 60 minutes. Thirty minutes covers basic care; longer visits leave time for play and brushing.
Cost
A cat sitter typically costs about $15 to $40 per day, depending on the number of visits (Catster). Rover's average drop-in visit was $21.80 in 2025. See pet sitter costs.
