How Often Should a Poodle Be Groomed?

Updated October 13, 2026 · 2 min read · 3 sources

Short answer

Poodles should be professionally groomed every 4 to 6 weeks, and brushed at home at least three times a week. Their curly coat keeps growing and doesn't shed much, so loose hair gets trapped and forms mats if it isn't brushed out and trimmed regularly. The same schedule applies to most poodle mixes, such as doodles.

Poodles are one of the highest-maintenance breeds to groom. Their tight, curly coat is often described as low-shedding, but the hair that does come loose stays caught in the coat instead of falling out, which is why regular brushing and haircuts are essential.

Poodle grooming schedule

Task How often
Professional groom (bath, haircut, nails, ears) Every 4–6 weeks
Brushing at home At least 3 times a week (daily for longer coats)
Nail trims At least monthly
Ear checks and cleaning About monthly, more if your dog swims
Teeth brushing Daily is ideal

Why Poodles can't skip appointments

  • Matting. Curly coats mat close to the skin. Mats pull, trap moisture and can hide skin problems.
  • Shave-downs. If mats are severe, the kindest option is often to clip the coat very short and start over, which costs extra and removes the look you want.
  • Ear hair and infections. Poodles grow hair in their ear canals; groomers and vets can advise whether yours needs it removed.

Does the haircut style change the schedule?

Yes. A short "puppy cut" or "lamb clip" is easiest to maintain and may stretch toward six weeks. Longer or show-style clips need more frequent professional work and daily brushing. Standard, Miniature and Toy Poodles all follow similar schedules; the bigger the dog, the longer and more expensive each appointment.

How much does Poodle grooming cost?

Whole Dog Journal puts grooming for Poodles, Shih Tzus and similar coats at about $50 to $200 per session, often monthly. See dog grooming costs.

Brushing a Poodle at home

  1. Use a slicker brush and a metal comb.
  2. Brush in sections, all the way down to the skin ("line brushing").
  3. Follow with the comb; if it catches, there's a tangle left.
  4. Pay special attention behind the ears, armpits, collar area and legs.
  5. Never bathe a matted Poodle before brushing; water tightens mats.
