Should You Tip Your Dog Groomer? How Much?
Yes. The usual tip for a dog groomer is 15% to 20% of the bill, about $7.50 to $15 on a $50 to $75 basic groom. Consider tipping more for a matted coat, a nervous or difficult dog, or a holiday visit. National chain salons generally don't expect tips, according to a groomer interviewed by NerdWallet, but tips are still appreciated.
Grooming is skilled, physical work, and in the US it's treated much like a hair salon visit: tipping is expected at most independent groomers.
How much to tip a dog groomer
| Bill | 15% tip | 20% tip |
|---|---|---|
| $50 | $7.50 | $10 |
| $75 | $11.25 | $15 |
| $100 | $15 | $20 |
| $150 | $22.50 | $30 |
NerdWallet, citing etiquette experts, gives 15% to 20% as the standard. Thumbtack and Catster suggest the same range for dog and cat groomers.
When to tip more
- Your dog's coat was matted or very dirty.
- Your dog is anxious, reactive or hard to handle.
- The groomer fit you in at short notice or stayed late.
- It's the holiday season; many owners give a larger tip or a gift to a regular groomer.
- Your dog is large or has a heavy coat that took a long time.
Do you tip at PetSmart, Petco or other chains?
Groomer Erin Myers told NerdWallet that national chains generally don't expect tips. Many owners still tip the individual groomer, especially one they see regularly.
Do you tip mobile groomers?
Yes, the same 15% to 20%. NerdWallet suggests considering a mobile groomer's extra costs, such as their vehicle and one-dog-at-a-time service.
Do you tip the owner of the grooming business?
Many people tip any groomer who did the work, including an owner. If you're unsure, tipping is never wrong; a thank-you note or a good online review is also valued.
What if you can't afford a full tip?
NerdWallet suggests tipping a smaller amount you can afford, or saving up for a larger holiday tip. Keeping your dog brushed between visits, so grooming is easier, is also appreciated.
