When Should You Start Training a Puppy?

Updated October 13, 2026 · 2 min read · 3 sources

Short answer

Start the day your puppy comes home, usually around 8 weeks old. Puppies can learn simple cues like sit, come and their name right away with short reward-based sessions. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends starting socialization, including puppy classes, as early as 7 to 8 weeks, once the puppy has had its first set of vaccines.

There's no reason to wait. Puppies are learning every minute, whether you're teaching them or not, so it pays to start guiding them from day one.

Puppy training timeline

Age What to work on
7–8 weeks (coming home) Name, sit, come, potty routine, crate introduction, gentle handling
8–16 weeks Socialization (people, sounds, surfaces, friendly vaccinated dogs), puppy class, bite inhibition
3–6 months Basic cues in more places: down, stay, loose-leash walking
6–18 months (adolescence) Keep practicing; expect some regression; build reliability around distractions

Why early training and socialization matter

The AVSAB recommends that puppies begin socializing as early as 7 to 8 weeks, for example in a puppy class, as long as they've had at least their first set of vaccines, show no signs of illness and stay current on follow-up vaccines. AVSAB notes that more deaths in dogs under 3 years old are attributed to behavior problems than to infectious disease. A well-socialized puppy is less likely to develop fear and aggression.

What an 8-week-old puppy can learn

The AKC's "basic five" commands for puppies are:

  1. Come (recall)
  2. Loose-leash walking
  3. Sit
  4. Down
  5. Stay

Keep sessions to 5 to 10 minutes, use rewards your puppy loves and avoid punishment such as leash corrections or yelling.

Start potty and crate training right away

House training begins the first day: take your puppy to the same spot, use a cue word, and praise calmly when they finish. America's VetDogs advises never scolding a puppy for an accident. See potty training and crate training.

Is it ever too late to train a dog?

No. Adult and senior dogs learn throughout life. Older dogs may take longer to drop old habits, but reward-based training works at any age.
