How Long Do Dog Vaccines Last?

Updated October 13, 2026 · 2 min read · 3 sources

Short answer

Dog vaccines are boosted on different schedules: the DAPP combination (distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus) every 3 years after the first-year booster, rabies every 1 or 3 years depending on the product and local law, and leptospirosis, Bordetella, Lyme and influenza every year. A first rabies shot is considered protective 28 days after it is given.

"How long does a dog vaccine last?" really asks two things: how long until the vaccine protects your dog, and how long until the next dose is due. The answers differ by vaccine.

How long each dog vaccine lasts (booster interval)

Vaccine Booster interval for adult dogs
DAPP / DHPP Every 3 years (after the booster given about a year after the puppy series)
Rabies 1 or 3 years, depending on the vaccine label and state or local law
Leptospirosis 1 year
Bordetella 1 year
Lyme disease 1 year
Canine influenza 1 year

How long do dog vaccines take to work?

No vaccine protects instantly. The immune system needs time to respond, and some vaccines need two doses before they protect at all:

  • Rabies: Under the national rabies compendium, a dog is considered immunized 28 days after its first rabies vaccination. After a booster, a dog is considered currently vaccinated immediately.
  • Two-dose vaccines (leptospirosis, Lyme, influenza, injectable Bordetella): Full protection is not expected until after the second dose, given 2 to 4 weeks after the first.
  • Puppy DAPP series: A puppy is not considered fully protected until the series is finished at 16 weeks or older, because maternal antibodies can block earlier doses. Keep puppies away from places where unknown dogs go until the vet says the series is complete.

This is why boarding facilities often ask that vaccines be given some days before a stay.

Do dog vaccines expire?

There are two kinds of "expiration":

  1. Your dog's vaccination status expires when the booster interval ends. A rabies certificate shows a due date; after that, your dog is considered overdue under state and local rules.
  2. The vaccine vial has an expiration date, which matters only to the clinic. Expired vaccine should never be used.

Does protection end the day the booster is due?

Not necessarily all at once, but the due date is the date the vaccine is licensed and recommended to cover, and it is the date that counts legally for rabies. If your dog is overdue, schedule the booster as soon as possible. For rabies, the national compendium treats an overdue dog with documented prior vaccination as current immediately after a booster.

How long do puppy shots last?

The puppy series is followed by a booster about one year later. After that, adult intervals apply. See the puppy shot schedule.
