How Long Does Microchipping Take and Does It Hurt?
Microchipping takes only a few seconds. The vet injects a chip about the size of a grain of rice under the skin, usually between the shoulder blades, with a needle; no anesthesia is needed. Most pets react about as they would to a vaccine. Many owners have it done during spay or neuter surgery, when the pet is already asleep.
Microchipping is one of the quickest procedures in veterinary medicine. Most of the appointment is the paperwork.
How microchipping is done
- Scan first. The vet scans your pet to make sure there isn't already a chip.
- Prepare the needle. Each chip comes sterile and pre-loaded in its own applicator.
- Implant. The skin is lifted, usually between the shoulder blades, and the chip is injected under the skin. Humane World for Animals notes the needle is relatively large-bore, and no anesthesia is needed.
- Scan again to confirm the chip reads.
- Register the chip number with your contact details.
The injection itself takes seconds; with the scans and paperwork, a few minutes.
Does microchipping hurt?
There is a brief pinch, similar to a vaccine, though the needle is larger. The AVMA describes microchipping as often less painful than other methods of permanent identification. Most dogs and cats flinch for a moment and then go back to normal. A small amount of soreness at the site for a day is possible.
To reduce discomfort:
- Do it during spay/neuter surgery or another procedure under anesthesia, which many owners choose for puppies and kittens.
- Ask about distraction with treats during the injection.
- Keep your pet calm and avoid rubbing the spot for a day.
Does a microchip hurt later?
Normally no. The chip usually bonds to surrounding tissue within about 24 hours. Rarely, a chip migrates or a small lump forms; tell your vet about any swelling that lasts.
At what age can a pet be microchipped?
Puppies and kittens can be microchipped young, often at their first vaccine visits or at spay/neuter. Ask your vet what's best for your pet's size.
How long until the chip works?
It works immediately; scanning confirms it. Your pet is only traceable once the chip is registered with your details, so do that right away.
