What Is Hand Stripping for Dogs?
Hand stripping is a grooming technique for wire-coated dogs in which the groomer pulls out dead outer hairs by hand or with a stripping knife instead of cutting them with clippers. It keeps the coat's harsh, weather-resistant texture and rich color. It's used on most terriers, wirehaired Dachshunds, Schnauzers and other wirehaired breeds, and costs more than a standard groom.
Wire coats grow differently from other coats. The outer hairs reach a certain length, die and stay loosely in the follicle. Hand stripping removes those dead hairs so new, harsh hair can grow in.
Which dogs need hand stripping?
The American Kennel Club notes that the coat, not just the breed, decides it. Examples include:
- Most terriers (for example Border, Cairn, Wire Fox, Airedale, Scottish and West Highland White Terriers), but not Bull Terriers, American Hairless Terriers or Boston Terriers
- Wirehaired Dachshunds (not smooth or long-haired Dachshunds)
- Schnauzers
- German Wirehaired Pointers, Wirehaired Vizslas and Wirehaired Pointing Griffons
- Irish Wolfhounds and Brussels Griffons
Hand stripping vs. clipping
| Hand stripping | Clipping | |
|---|---|---|
| Method | Dead hair pulled out by hand or with a stripping knife | Hair cut short with clippers |
| Coat texture | Stays harsh and wiry | Becomes softer over time |
| Color | Stays rich | Can fade or lighten |
| Time and cost | Longer and more expensive | Faster and cheaper |
| Best for | Show dogs and owners who want the breed's natural coat | Pet dogs where convenience matters most |
The AKC says clipping a wire coat can soften it, change its color and sheen, disrupt the hair growth cycle, and lead to skin problems and poorer temperature regulation.
Does hand stripping hurt?
Groomer Kim Kier told the AKC most dogs don't mind it on the body, because the dead hair comes out easily. Sensitive areas such as the face, throat and sanitary areas are usually done with clippers or thinning shears. Done by someone without training, stripping can be painful, so choose a groomer experienced with your breed.
How often?
It depends on the breed and how fast the coat grows. A groomer writing for iHeartDogs says wire-coated dogs can typically go 2 to 3 months between professional appointments. Some owners keep the coat "rolling" with a little stripping every few weeks, so it always looks tidy.
How much does hand stripping cost?
The AKC describes it as a premium service that costs more than a traditional groom, because it takes much longer. Ask local groomers for a quote; not every groomer offers it.
