What Is Vet Exam Fee Coverage in Pet Insurance?
Exam fee coverage reimburses the veterinarian's exam or office-visit charge when your pet is seen for a covered accident or illness, which some base policies leave out. It does not cover annual wellness exams. Insurers such as ASPCA, Fetch, Nationwide, Pumpkin and Spot include it as standard; Embrace, Figo, Lemonade and Pets Best sell it as an add-on; Healthy Paws and Trupanion exclude it.
Every sick or injured pet's vet visit starts with an exam fee. Whether your insurance reimburses that fee depends on the insurer, and it can make a real difference over a year of claims.
What exam fee coverage includes
| Covered | Not covered |
|---|---|
| Exam / office visit fee for an eligible accident or illness | Annual wellness exam |
| Exams for pre-existing conditions | |
| Routine preventive visits |
Lemonade's description of its Vet Visit add-on is typical: it covers the vet visit fee for eligible accidents and illnesses (for example, the exam before an X-ray and cast for a broken leg), is subject to your deductible and co-insurance, and doesn't cover wellness exams or pre-existing conditions.
Which insurers cover exam fees?

Do I need vet visit fee coverage?
Consider what you'd claim in a year. Lemonade cites typical exam fees of $50 to $150; emergency exam fees run higher. If your pet has two or three sick visits a year, plus an emergency, exam fees alone can add up to several hundred dollars. On the other hand, the fee still goes toward your deductible and co-insurance, so on a policy with a high deductible you might not see much of it back.
Exam fee coverage tends to be worth it if:
- Your pet has frequent minor problems (ear infections, skin issues, stomach upsets).
- You choose a low deductible.
It may not be worth it if:
- Your deductible is high and you mainly want catastrophe protection.
- The add-on costs more per year than the exam fees you'd realistically claim.
Is exam fee coverage the same as wellness coverage?
No. Wellness coverage pays for planned preventive care (annual exams, vaccines, routine tests). Exam fee coverage pays for the exam on sick or injury visits. Many owners buy one without the other.
