What Vaccines Are Required for Dog Boarding?

Updated October 13, 2026 · 2 min read · 3 sources

Short answer

Most dog boarding facilities and daycares require proof of three vaccines: rabies, DHPP (distemper-parvo combination) and Bordetella (kennel cough). Some also require canine influenza. Plan to have vaccines given well before the stay; PetSmart, for example, prefers vaccines at least 10 days before check-in, and requires written veterinary records rather than a rabies tag.

Boarding kennels and daycares put many dogs together, so they require vaccines that protect every guest. Requirements vary by facility and sometimes by local law, so always check before you book.

Typical vaccine requirements

Vaccine Usually required? Notes
Rabies Yes Also required by law in most states
DHPP / DAPP Yes Distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, parainfluenza
Bordetella (kennel cough) Yes, at most facilities PetSmart requires renewal every 12 months
Canine influenza Some facilities Recommended by AAHA for dogs at risk
Leptospirosis Rarely required Core vaccine under AAHA's 2022 guidelines

PetSmart's PetsHotel and Day Camp, for example, require rabies, DAPP/DHPP and Bordetella for dogs. Cats boarding at PetsHotel need rabies and FVRCP.

How far in advance should vaccines be given?

  • PetSmart prefers vaccines at least 10 days before check-in for hotel, day camp and training.
  • Some vaccines need two doses before they protect fully (for example injectable Bordetella and canine influenza, given 2 to 4 weeks apart under AAHA's guidelines), so start early if your dog has never had them.
  • Intranasal or oral Bordetella is a single dose.

What proof do you need?

  • Written records from your veterinarian showing vaccine dates and expiration dates.
  • A rabies tag alone usually isn't accepted (PetSmart doesn't accept it in place of records).
  • Titer tests generally aren't accepted instead of vaccines (PetSmart doesn't accept them).

What about puppies?

Puppies need their full DHPP series (until at least 16 weeks) and rabies before most facilities will board them. Some offer puppy-specific day programs earlier; ask about requirements.

Does the Bordetella vaccine prevent kennel cough completely?

No. Kennel cough can be caused by several bacteria and viruses, so vaccinated dogs can still catch it, but usually more mildly. The SF SPCA recommends choosing facilities that require all boarders to be current on vaccines, including Bordetella.
