When Should You Spay or Neuter Your Cat?
Spay or neuter your cat by five months of age. AAHA endorses the "Fix Felines by Five" recommendation because female kittens can go into heat as early as four months, and early sterilization prevents unplanned litters, spraying and roaming. Adult cats of any age can still be spayed or neutered after a health check.
Unlike large-breed dogs, cats don't show the same orthopedic concerns about early sterilization, and they mature fast. That's why veterinary organizations give a clear target for cats.
The recommended age: by 5 months
The American Animal Hospital Association endorses the Fix Felines by Five initiative, which recommends spaying or neutering pet cats by five months of age. Female kittens can enter their first heat as early as four months, although it usually starts at five or six months, so waiting until six months or later risks an unplanned litter.
| Cat | Recommended timing |
|---|---|
| Female kitten | By 5 months, ideally before the first heat |
| Male kitten | By 5 months, before spraying and roaming start |
| Adult cat (any age) | As soon as practical after a health check |
Why earlier is better for cats
- Prevents pregnancy: A female cat can become pregnant during her first heat.
- Reduces mammary cancer risk in females, according to AAHA.
- Reduces spraying, marking and fighting in males, habits that are hard to break once started.
- Ends heat cycles, with their loud yowling, restlessness and attempts to escape.
- Fits the kitten schedule: Surgery can be timed with the last kitten vaccines and a microchip. See the kitten vaccination schedule.
When should I spay my kitten if she's indoor-only?
Still by five months. Indoor cats in heat are miserable and often try hard to get outside, and many "indoor-only" cats slip out a door at least once. Spaying also gives the mammary cancer protection that indoor cats need as much as outdoor ones.
Can you spay a cat in heat?
Many clinics can, though some prefer to wait until the heat ends and may charge more if the cat is in heat. Ask your vet.
