Does Dog Food Expire? How Long It Lasts After Opening

Updated October 13, 2026 · 2 min read · 4 sources

Short answer

Yes. Unopened dry dog food typically lasts about 12 to 18 months and unopened cans about two years; check the "best by" date. Once opened, kibble is best used within about two weeks, opened wet food should be refrigerated and used within about five days, and wet food left in the bowl should be discarded after about two hours.

Pet food has a "best by" or expiration date for a reason: fats go rancid, vitamins degrade, and moist food can grow bacteria and mold. Storage matters as much as the date.

How long dog food lasts

Food Unopened After opening
Dry kibble About 12–18 months (check the best-by date) Best used within about 2 weeks
Canned / wet food About 2 years Refrigerate; generally up to about 5 days, per manufacturer guidance
Wet food in the bowl — Up to about 2 hours (less in hot weather)
Dry food in the bowl — Up to about 8 hours

Does dry dog food expire?

Yes. Even sealed, kibble's fats slowly oxidize. After the bag is opened, air and humidity speed that up, which is why Dogster's vet-reviewed guidance is to use an open bag within about two weeks. In practice, buy a bag size your dog will finish in that time.

How to store dog food (FDA advice)

  • Keep food in its original bag. It has the product name, lot number and best-by date you'd need if there's a recall or problem. If you use a storage bin, put the whole bag inside it.
  • Store in a cool, dry place below 80°F. Avoid garages, laundry rooms and spots near heat sources.
  • Refrigerate opened cans promptly at 40°F or below, covered or in a sealed container.
  • Wash bowls and scoops after each use; don't use the food scoop for anything else.
  • Don't top up old food with new. Dogster notes contaminants can transfer.

Signs dog food has gone bad

  • Sour, rancid or "off" smell compared with when you opened it
  • Mold, discoloration, dampness, clumping or bugs
  • Swollen, dented or leaking cans
  • Your dog suddenly refuses it or gets sick after eating from a new bag

If you suspect a problem, stop feeding it, keep the packaging and see how to check if your dog food has been recalled.

Is it OK to feed expired dog food?

It's not recommended. Nutrients decline and fats may have gone rancid even if the food looks fine. If your dog ate a small amount of slightly expired dry food and seems normal, there's usually no need to panic, but call your vet if you see vomiting, diarrhea or lethargy.
