How Long Do Pet Store Goldfish Live?
A pet store goldfish can live 10 to 15 years in a properly filtered tank, and common goldfish can reach 20 to 30 years in ponds. Kept in a small unfiltered bowl, most live only about 1 to 3 years. Their short-lived reputation comes from poor housing: goldfish need about 20 gallons for the first fish, strong filtration and weekly water changes.
Goldfish are often won at fairs or bought as inexpensive "starter" fish and kept in bowls, which is why many people think they live only a year or two. In the right setup they're one of the longest-lived pets you can buy.
Goldfish lifespan by type and housing
| Typical lifespan | |
|---|---|
| Fancy goldfish (orandas, fantails, ranchu) | 10–15 years |
| Common goldfish, comets, shubunkins | 15–30 years |
| In a filtered tank | 10–15 years |
| In an outdoor pond | 20–30 years |
| In an unfiltered bowl | 1–3 years |

Why goldfish die young in bowls
- Waste: goldfish produce a lot of waste, and in a small volume of water ammonia and nitrite build up quickly.
- No filtration: bowls rarely have filters, so there's nowhere for the beneficial bacteria that process waste to live.
- Unstable conditions: small volumes heat and cool quickly.
- Stress from poor water and crowding weakens the immune system.
The right setup for a goldfish
| Need | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Tank size | At least 20 gallons for one goldfish, plus about 10 gallons for each additional fish (Chewy); about 20 gallons per fish (PetMD); large varieties need more |
| Filter | Rated to turn over the tank volume at least five times per hour |
| Water changes | About 25% weekly, with weekly tests |
| Temperature | Room temperature; PetMD suggests 72–76°F, Chewy 65–75°F; no heater needed in most homes |
| Diet | Goldfish pellets (sinking preferred), plus vegetables like blanched peas or zucchini; adults fed once a day |
Are pet store "feeder" goldfish different?
Feeder goldfish are usually common or comet goldfish bred cheaply in large numbers. They may be stressed or carry parasites when bought, but with quarantine, good water and space, they can live as long as any other goldfish, and common goldfish are the longest-lived type.
Do goldfish need a friend?
Goldfish are social and do well in groups, but each extra fish needs more water. Don't add tropical fish, which need warmer water.
