How Long Can Aquarium Fish Go Without Food?

Updated October 13, 2026 · 2 min read · 3 sources

Short answer

Most healthy adult aquarium fish can go about two to four days without food without problems, and bettas can manage up to about a week. For a weekend away, healthy adult fish are generally fine unfed. For longer trips, use a tested automatic feeder or a pet sitter, because young fish, small fish and plant-eaters need food more often.

Fish are cold-blooded and burn far less energy than mammals, so a healthy adult fish can handle a short break from feeding. How long depends on the species, size and age of the fish and the condition of the tank.

How long fish can go without food

Fish Typical safe gap
Most healthy adult aquarium fish About 2–4 days
Betta Up to about a week
Larger, healthy adults such as angelfish Longer gaps reported (up to about two weeks), but not recommended
Fry and very small fish Should not go without food; need frequent small meals
Plant-eating species Need smaller, more frequent meals than carnivores

Planning for a trip

A weekend (2–3 days): Most healthy adult fish will be fine. Feed normally the day you leave; don't overfeed "to make up for it," which fouls the water.

Longer than about 4 days: Arrange food. Options:

  1. Automatic feeder. Programmable feeders drop measured portions on a schedule. Test it for several days before you leave to make sure it doesn't jam or overfeed.
  2. Pet sitter. Someone visiting every other day can feed and check the tank. Pre-portion food into labeled daily containers, because overfeeding by well-meaning sitters is common.
  3. Vacation feeder blocks. Time-release blocks can last up to about a week, but results vary with tank size and filtration, and some cloud the water. Test one first.

Before you leave

  • Do a partial water change a few days before, not a massive clean the night before (which can stress fish).
  • Check the heater, filter and lights; put lights on a timer.
  • Test water parameters so you leave the tank in good condition.
  • Make sure the sitter knows where the food is and how much to give.

After you return

Check all fish, remove any uneaten food or debris, and resume normal feeding. Test the water within a day or two.
