Ohio Rabies Vaccination Laws for Dogs and Cats

Updated October 13, 2026 · 2 min read · 4 sources

Short answer

Ohio has no general state law requiring rabies vaccination of pets. Local health boards can require vaccination when rabies is prevalent (R.C. 955.26), and dangerous dog registration requires proof of vaccination. A dog that bites a person must be quarantined for at least 10 days (955.261).

Ohio does not have a statewide rabies vaccination requirement for pet owners, but that does not make the vaccine optional everywhere in the state.

Question Answer
Statewide requirement? No general mandate (MSU)
Health board orders Can require vaccination (955.26)
After a bite 10-day quarantine (955.261)

What Ohio law says

  • MSU notes Ohio has no state rabies vaccination law (a 1964 Attorney General opinion).
  • Health boards may declare a quarantine and require vaccination before registration (955.26).
  • A biting dog may not be removed from the county or killed during the quarantine except in limited cases.

Why you will still need a rabies shot

  • Cities and counties can require rabies vaccination and usually require it for a dog license.
  • Boarding kennels, groomers, daycares and training classes almost always ask for a current rabies certificate.
  • If your pet bites someone, being unvaccinated usually means a longer and stricter quarantine.
  • Veterinary groups list rabies as a core vaccine for every dog (AAHA).

How rabies boosters work

The first rabies vaccine is treated as good for one year, no matter which product is used. After the one-year booster, vaccines labeled for three years are generally accepted as protecting for three years, if state and local law allow it (Compendium of Animal Rabies Prevention and Control). Your rabies certificate shows the exact due date, and that date is what animal control and licensing offices go by. More detail: how long a rabies shot is good for.

Cats and other pets

Check the table above for whether Ohio law covers cats and ferrets; where state law is silent, local ordinances may still require it. See are cat vaccines required by law.

Rabies vaccination is also tied to licensing in many places; see Ohio dog license requirements. Your local veterinarian or a low-cost vaccine clinic can give the shot and issue the certificate and tag.
